Pre care and aftercare

What is pre care and aftercare for cosmetic tattooing?

Before care is basically the prep you do before your procedure to make sure the canvas that is your skin is in prime condition to accept pigmentation with little irritation or complications.

Aftercare is how you take care of the tattoo afterwards to ensure your fresh tattoo heals well and to avoid infection.

Why is aftercare so important?

Aftercare can make or break your permanent makeup!  Following the instructions and do’s and don’ts below will ensure you give your brows, lips or eyeliner the best conditions to heal as beautifully as possible.

It might sound complicated, but honestly it’s not at all.  I just try to give you as much information as possible because I take your face seriously.  And let’s be real, it’s just a little maintenance for a whole lot of no maintenance!

Before your appointment

  • Avoid heavy exercise 24 hours before your appointment.
  • Do not consume any alcohol or caffeine 24 hours before your appointment.
  • Don’t take any anti-inflammatories such as aspirin, paracetamol, or Ibuprofen at least 24 hours beforehand.  All of these can raise blood pressure which is problematic to cosmetic tattooing.
  • Do not take any supplements such as Niacin, Vitamin E, fish oil and Magnesium one week before your appointment. All of these thin the blood and can cause issues while tattooing.
  • Do not have any skin treatments, Botox or fillers on or near the area to be treated at least 3 weeks before your appointment.
  • Do not use any cosmetics containing Retinol, AHA’s and BHA’s on your face for 2 weeks before your appointment.
  • Avoid booking your appointment during menstruation as this causes heightened sensitivity.
  • Before your appointment please make sure that you are well rested, hydrated and that you have had something to eat. It is best to avoid scheduling in anything active or stressful after your appointment. Allow plenty of time in case your procedure takes longer than expected.

  • For Ombré Brow appointments do not have any hair removal or tinting 1 week beforehand. It is a good idea to have your brows waxed the week before your appointment. This will ensure your brows stay hair-free during the healing process.

  • For Lip Tint Appointments frequently apply Bepanthen daily during the week before your appointment. Ensuring that your lips are supple will increase the effectiveness of the tint.
  • Drink at least 2 litres of water per day at least 1 week before your appointment to hydrate the lips.
  • If you have a cold sore present you must reschedule your appointment until it has cleared up.

One hour after your appointment, wipe your brows or lips with the waterwipe provided. This will stop the lymphatic fluid from drying and forming a crust.

Repeat these steps every morning and night for 7-14 days until healed:

Splash your face with warm water and GENTLY wash your brows or lips with a gentle fragrance free and soap free cleanser such as Cetaphil, QV or Dermaveen.  Rinse with warm water until no soap remains. Do not use too much water or have the water running too hard.

Pat dry with tissues or cotton rounds.

Then apply a rice grain-sized amount of the provided ointment or Bepanthen to each brow or lip. Never apply ointment to damp skin and don’t suffocate them by applying too much ointment.

Apply the balm once or twice more during the day to keep them moist. (Lips can have ointment applied as much as needed).

Continue to apply the ointment once a day for 1 month.

aftercare instructions

  • For the first week, showers should be short and not too hot (we don’t want to create any steamy situations).
  • While showering, keep your face out of the water until the end when you clean your brows or lips. Make sure not to get any shampoo or conditioner on your face. Don’t have the water running too hard, keep it gentle!
  • No touching because we want to keep the area clean to avoid infection
  • Do not scratch, pick for force off any scabbing or flaking.  This may cause scarring and result in loss of pigment. If skin becomes itchy, apply ointment to the spot.
  • Keep the treated area shaded from the sun, and don’t enter saunas, spas, or steam rooms for 2 weeks.
  • Don’t put any products including makeup directly on the treated area for 2 weeks.
  • do not apply any active cosmetics to your face including any with AHA’s, BHA’s or Retinol for 3 weeks. These products should never be applied to the treated area directly as they will cause premature fading of the cosmetic tattoo.
  • Do not have any skin treatments for 4 weeks because your skin is still healing.
  • Take it easy for the rest of the day so your permanent makeup can heal nicely. Avoid heavy exercise for a few days afterwards.

  • Use a straw to drink, and avoid touching food to the lips for the first few days after the procedure.
  • Do not eat spicy food for the first 48 hours.
  • Avoid getting toothpaste on your lips and do not use any teeth whitening products for 4 weeks.
  • If you have EVER had cold sores, it is advised to ask a chemist for the cold sore preventative Famvir (or similar) to take immediately after the procedure. Carriers of the herpes simplex will experience an outbreak if a preventative is not taken and this will ruin the tattoo.
