Before and aftercare

What is before and after care for cosmetic tattooing?

Before care is basically the prep you do before your procedure to make sure the canvas that is your skin is in prime condition to accept pigmentation with little irritation or complications.

Aftercare is how you take care of the tattoo afterwards to ensure your fresh tattoo heals well and to avoid infection.

Why is aftercare so important?

Aftercare can make or break your permanent makeup!  Following the instructions and do’s and don’ts below will ensure you give your brows, lips or eyeliner the best conditions to heal as beautifully as possible.

It might sound complicated, but honestly it’s not at all.  I just try to give you as much information as possible because I take your face seriously.  And let’s be real, it’s just a little maintenance for a whole lot of no maintenance!

Before your appointment

BEFORE
  • Avoid heavy exercise the day before your appointment.
  • It is important not to consume any alcohol, caffeine or hot beverages before your appointment. Don’t take any anti-inflammatories such as aspirin, paracetamol, or Ibuprofen at least 24 hours beforehand.  All of these can raise blood pressure which is problematic to cosmetic tattooing.
  • Supplements such as Niacin, Vitamin E, fish oil and Magnesium should also be avoided for one week beforehand. All of these thin the blood and can cause issues while tattooing.
  • Do not have any skin treatments, Botox or fillers on or near the area to be treated at least 2 weeks beforehand and avoid applying active cosmetics to the treated area.
  • Before your appointment please make sure that you are well rested, hydrated and that you have had something to eat. It is best to avoid scheduling in anything active or stressful after your appointment. Allow plenty of time in case your procedure takes longer than expected.
  • Avoid booking your appointment during menstruation as this causes heightened sensitivity.

Eyebrows – Do not have any hair removal or tinting within 5 days before the procedure. It is a good idea to have your brows waxed the week before your appointment. This will ensure your brows stay hair-free during the healing process.

Eyeliner – Cease using eyelash serums and do not have an eyelash lift or extensions applied for at least 3 days before the procedure.  Do not wear contact lenses, false eyelashes or mascara to the appointment.

Lips – Frequently apply Bepanthen during the week before your appointment. Ensuring that your lips are supple will increase the effectiveness of the tint.

If you have a cold sore present you must reschedule your appointment until it has cleared up.

Make sure to bring your favourite lipsticks along or photos of your desired colour!

AFTER

Brows

1) One hour after your appointment, wipe your brows with the waterwipe provided. This will stop the lymphatic fluid from drying and forming a crust.

2) Gently wash your brows that night with a gentle fragrance-free soap or face wash from a brand such as Cetaphil, QV, Dermaveen or use baby shampoo. Use circular motions for 10 seconds then rinse until no soap remains. Avoid too hot water or over-rinsing.

Pat your brows dry with tissues then apply a rice grain-sized amount of the provided balm or Bepanthen to each brow. Never apply balm to damp brows and don’t suffocate them by applying too much balm.

3) For the next 5 days wash, dry and apply balm to your brows (as above) twice a day (morning and night).

Apply the balm once more during the day to keep them moist and help with any itchiness.

Lips

1) One hour after your appointment, wipe over your lips with the waterwipe provided.  This will stop the lymph fluid from drying and forming a crust.

2) Gently wash your lips that night with a fragrance-free soap such as Cetaphil or baby shampoo. Use circular motions for 10 seconds then rinse until no soap remains. Avoid too hot water or over-rinsing.

Pat your lips dry with tissues then apply a rice grain-sized amount of the provided balm or Bepanthen to each lip. Never apply balm to damp lips and don’t suffocate them by applying too much balm.

3) For the next 5 days wash, dry and apply balm to your lips (as above) twice a day (morning and night).

Apply the balm during the day to keep them moist and help with any itchiness.

Eyeliner

1) Wash your face as usual a gentle, fragrance-free soap. Avoid other products such as shampoo getting on your tattoo. Dab your eyes dry with a tissue.

2) Apply a half rice grain size of Bepanthen. Reapply 2-3 times a day until healed (about 5-7 days).

aftercare instructions

  • For the first 5 days, showers should be warm only and less than 5 mins (we don’t want to create any steamy situations).
  • While showering, keep your face out of the water until the end when you clean your brows or lips. Make sure not to get any shampoo or conditioner on your face.
  • No touching because we want to keep the brows clean to avoid infection
  • Do not scratch, pick for force off any scabbing or flaking.  This may cause scarring and result in loss of pigment. If skin becomes itchy, apply balm or Bepanthen.
  • Keep the treated area shaded from the sun, and don’t enter saunas, spas, or steam rooms for 2 weeks.
  • Don’t put any products including makeup directly on the treated area for 2 weeks. (
  • do not apply any active cosmetics to your face including any with AHA’s, BHA’s or Retinol. These products should never be applied to the treated area as they will cause premature fading of the cosmetic tattoo.
  • Do not have any skin treatments between your initial appointment and your perfection appointment. Or for 2 weeks after your perfection appointment.
  • Take it easy for the rest of the day so your permanent makeup can heal nicely. Avoid heavy exercise for a few days.

Eyeliner

  • Do not wear contact lenses for at least 24 hours post procedure.
  • Do not touch your eyes on the day after the procedure.
  • Use saline solution to rinse eyes if they feel gritty.

Lips

  • Use a straw to drink, and avoid touching food to the lips for the first few days after the procedure.
  • Do not eat spicy food for the first 28 hours.
  • If you have EVER had cold sores, it is advised to ask a chemist for the cold sore preventative Famvir (or similar) to take immediately after the procedure. Carriers of the herpes simplex will experience an outbreak if a preventative is not taken and this will ruin the tattoo.
